Once called Alanui Moi, or “King's Road”, Front Street was the epicenter of the Hawaiian Kingdom from 1820 - 1845 and home to King Kamehameha III. Lahaina served as a major whaling port and fishing town in the 1800s due to its prime location on whale migration routes, calm ocean conditions and endless days of perfect sunshine. With as many as 400 ships at a time docked in the harbor, Lahaina soon became a sailor's dreamland.
In recent times, Lahaina is often referred to as “the jewel in the crown of Maui,” and highly regarded for its beautiful ocean and mountain views, historic buildings, and diverse selection of shops, eateries, and other businesses. When that street is restored we’ll take that afternoon walk again. Oh yes, we will.
