This painting is based on a photo of the University Bridge I took in 2009 from underneath the Ship Canal Bridge near the University of Washington in Seattle. During most of my work I struggle with naming my art with a fitting, and perhaps meaningful title. Usually, while I am in the process of the last few details – the painting itself gives me a proper name. There was no woman with a purple scarf in the photo, but as I began the painting, I imagined her there, perhaps on her morning walk to work. Then, when I was almost done painting, I noticed a lone man walking across the bridge. How had I missed that? Hence, “Two Souls at Daybreak”. Looking at the finished piece, I thought to myself, “I wonder if she saw him.”
